SSI: Canada Towable Sales Grow 18.8% in December

Canadian towable sales finished 2016 on a strong note, punctuating a 15.1% year-over-year jump in November with an 18.8% gain during December. For the full year, registrations showed a 12.2% decline compared with 2015, according to the latest report from Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI).
Results by segment showed:
• Sales in the travel trailer sector soared 22.5% in December but declined 9.4% for the full year.
• Canadian fifth-wheel sales edged up 3.9% in December while showing a 22.1% decrease for 2016.
• Folding camping trailer registrations rose 50% in December on low volume but retreated 12% for the 12 months.
• The park model RV sector shipped four units for the month and were down 59.2% for the year.
Thor Industries Inc. was the overall Canadian towable sales leader for the 12 months with a 55.4% market share, ahead of Forest River Inc. which notched a 33.7% share.
Thor was the leader in travel trailer sales for the year, posting a 56.6% market share, followed by Forest River (33.3%) and Gulf Stream Coach Inc. (2.5%). Thor was No. 1 in Canadian fifth-wheel sales, capturing a 57.2% market share, followed by Forest River (29.5%) and Grand Design (8.2%).
Forest River led year-over-year Canadian folding camping trailer sales with a 63.6% market share while Thor posted a 27.1% share. Woodland Park Inc. led the park model segment for the 12 months with a 37.7% market share followed by Forest River (22.6%) and Cavco Industries Inc. (20.8%).
